Columbia described Lissie as straight-talking, TheRightCopy agrees, her no-nonsense attitude is refreshing and her interpretations of singles from Lady GaGa and Kid Kudi add something that only a talented singer can.
Lissie is a great find and her EP ‘Covered Up in Flowers’ is a brilliant collection of her favourite songs. Kid Cudi’s ‘Pursuit of Happiness’ is particularly striking as Lissie sings with a melodic aggression that creates an electric vibe. ‘I love the defiance in it and I just love performing it because it helps towards getting out my aggression and makes me feel strong overall’ Lissie says.
Lissie has been described as bluesy-folk but judging from what she has managed to do to these songs, we shouldn’t pidgeon-hole her too quickly. Her husky and assertive tones tell you to sit up and listen.
Listen to the Ship Song, which we think she’s delivered to perfection; she proves that she literally does rock hoisting up our emotions to the perfect level of melancholy.
Covered up in Flowers is out Monday 20
